RECLAIM OWNERSHIP OF YOUR CRAFT

Actors need to be selfish. Yes, selfish. As in, fiercely protective of the one thing they actually own: their process. The work is yours. Your choices, your imagination, your vulnerability. All of it comes from a place that’s so much more important than casting decisions, reviews, or validation, because acting is about what you’re willing to reveal.

So many actors are unable to enjoy their craft on a daily basis. They treat auditions and classes as luke-warm waiting rooms, viewing practice as a lesser version of the work instead of the work itself. And they get stuck in a place of wanting their work to be good or liked.

This is why I teach.

I believe that choosing to act and being vulnerable enough to show people what’s inside is brave and important. This work needs to be honored every time you approach it, whether you’re the lead in a successful show, auditioning for a film, or working on a monologue for class. My goal as a teacher and coach is to help actors to feel powerful, proud, and grounded ALL THE TIME. It allows them to take ownership of their voice and create work that feels honest and necessary regardless of how it’s received.

Acting should feel like a diary you’re brave enough to let other people read; it’s revealing something true and having the courage to let go of how it’s perceived.

TEENS & ACTING AS A TOOL FOR BECOMING YOURSELF

When people think about acting, they often think about performance. I think about connection.

At its core, acting is the practice of being seen. That’s challenging work for anyone, but especially for teenagers, who are already asking big questions about who they are and where they belong.

I found theatre when I was thirteen. Like many people that age, I felt things deeply but didn’t always have the words to express them, and theatre gave me a safe place to explore the person I was becoming.

Now as a parent of my own 13 year old, it’s clear to me her experience growing up is vastly different from mine. With technology constantly offering the opportunity to avoid connection, seeking ‘safe’ entertainment without risking actual engagement, I see a lot of young people on a path of isolation, who may never find the courage to connect with others in meaningful ways.

Teaching teens has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work, partly because of what I know they’re up against: social pressure, anxiety, and the constant comparison and judgement they experience every day at school. In acting we talk about the ‘obstacle’ – what our character has to overcome to get what they want. Acting offers teens something increasingly rare: a space to be present, creative, and connected, to overcome the social and emotional obstacles of this age and just be themselves.

Acting teaches kindness, empathy, and courage. It’s training for life.
